Blacksmithing Overview
Blacksmithing (BS) is a primary profession which allows you to create armor and weapons from metals. The metals are in the form of bars. These bars are smelted by miners (It is wise to have mining as the other secondary profession, as the majority of the materials necessary to craft armor and weapons can be acquired from mining) which get them from mineral veins located throughout the world. Becoming a BS is the first step and it can be done by visiting any blacksmith trainer located in main cities or towns (IF, SW and in Auberdine). Aside from creating armor and weapons BS's also create materials that are useful by other professions, such as Enchanting and Engineering.
Blacksmith Ranks
Apprentice (1 - max 75)
The apprentice rank can be trained in any major city or some towns (see mention above). Primarily an apprentice works copper, rough and coarse stone.
Journeyman (75 - max 150)
Similar to the apprentice rank you can train at any major city (Darnassas, IF or SW). The journeyman works mainly with copper also, but some work with silver, bronze and gold is performed.
Expert (150 - max 225)
Like the previous, training for expert can be done at any major city. The expert mainly works with bronze and iron. Closer to skill level 225 (from 200-225) is when BS will payoff, items that are highly demanded can be made and a good profit is available. It is important that you attempt to complete the ornate mithril quests before actually choosing a BS specialty.
Mithril Order: At skill level 210 and minimum level 40 you can begin the mithril order quests which begin in SW by NPC Hank the Hammer (http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/mob.html?wmob=7798). The quests lead to NPC Galvan the Ancient (http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/mob.html?wmob=7802). He gives you quests to learn valuable ornate mithril items. By this time you will be ready to become an Artisan BS.
Artisan (225 - max 300)
At skill 210 and minimum level 40 you will be able to choose a BS specialty track, either armorsmith or weaponsmith. When you are ready to learn the specialty visit NPC Myolor Sunderfury (http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/mob.html?wmob=11145) and he will guide you to the appropriate person that will teach you the specialty, keep in mind once you choose a specialty you can't change your mind.
Once you have reached level 225 you can train with the BS in Booty Bay, NPC Brick Keencraft (http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/mob.html?wmob=2836) and he will teach you patterns that are valuable in upcoming quests. Once you reach level 230 you may continue the ornate mithril quest by visiting gadgetzan and talking to NPC Trenton Lighthammer (http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/mob.html?wmob=7804), he will give you quests that reward you with the rest of the patterns of the ornate mithril set.
By now you should have decided a specialty (weaponsmith there are patterns that you will need to buy in order to complete the quest, for example Massive Iron Axe can be purchased from NPC Jaquilina Dramet (http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/mob.html?wmob=2483) or from the AH. On the contrary for armorsmith it requires you to make items from the ornate mithril set) and are on your way to making money. Once you learn all the pattern you can learn from the specialty trainers you will have to complete quests to learn the specific patterns.
Thorium Brotherhood: This is the best way to attain patterns. Though it is hard, but it is the only way aside from purchasing them from the AH. The brotherhood's headquarter is located in Searing Gorge (Thorium Point), near the graveyard. The first NPC you will need to speak to is Derotain Mudsipper (http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/mob.html?wmob=14567). The minimum level to speak to him is BS 265 and level 50. From there begins a chain of quests that will allow you to gain faction points with the brotherhood eventually leading to many valuable patterns, the quests are located in Thorium Point in the Searing gorge.
More to come.
